Yes, it's a children's book. And it's engaging, informative, well-formatted, and with lovely illustrations to boot. It would make a perfect companion piece to Wilder's "Little House" books, especially the first one having to deal with the Big Woods of Wisconsin. Greenwood has done an excellent job of tying in a lot of background information as well as actual history to a basic story about a representative (fictional) pioneer family, their building in the wilderness, and their day-to-day life. The different sections also have a lot of craft / how-to pages for children (and adults!) to try their hands at making some of the pioneer items detailed in the book. If you have children, work with children, have grandchildren - share this book with them. I guarantee you'll all enjoy it.

I bought this book for my third grade daughter for a pioneer study. I read the whole book out loud to her and we both enjoyed it greatly. It was filled with information and interesting details. I even learned a few new things and that's saying something because I have loved studying pioneers since I was a girl. The illustrations are handsome and the book is laid out very nicely. The narrative story of the family is done well, it is easily read over a few days time in small sessions. You won't feel overwhelmed by the information here but neither will you feel gypped either. The activities in the book are approachable without being so watered down that you wondered if they really qualified as pioneer study tie ins. Well done!

I probably can't add much to other reviews. It is simply an excellent book. Very interesting with lots of neat facts and information about early American life that both children and adults alike will enjoy learning about. The illustrations are well done. The activities are great! Hands down a great book to read to/with your children and follow up with activities.

After reading this book, I would like to get a lot more of the Barbara Greenwood books for our school library. It is rare that you can find true history in STORY FORM along with such cute photos. The artist in this book did a very good job!

Book gives destined description and pictures of various situation and common tools used in the time of settling the west. It is along the vein of Laura Ingall's stories but with a more non fiction feel and not exactly a story. It does follow a family called the Robertsons but there is mostly information regarding living. We homeschool and really enjoy this book and ehat it offers.

I very much enjoyed the historical notes and activities interspersed throughout the text. These additions make for great homeschooling activities and give the story more depth. It was also nice that they were placed in spots where they did not distract from the fictional story of the Robertson family. There were enough illustrations to keep younger learners interested. The family described lived in Canada, but everything applied just as well to American pioneer families. I look forward to reading more of this author's work.

I loved this book. My children have been very into pioneers lately and so I bought this book after a friend recommended it. I wasn't disappointed. I loved the way the author mixed a fictional story (we follow the Robertson family through their daily life) with actual facts (how pioneers made butter, what a typical home looked like, etc.). I also enjoyed the many hands on crafts and activities that were included throughout the book. I would read a little bit to my children every day. They loved it! Great book. I will definitely be recommending this book to friends.

If you or your child are interested in pioneer life, this is a great book with many facts and very nice illustrations. I gave this to an 8 year old who is an advanced reader, but the stories/experiences of the pioneer family could be read to a younger child. I read the book myself when it arrived, I could not put it down.

The story was interesting, and the character development was progressing along nicely, but then all of a sudden, it's like someone told Emily Giffin "you need to wrap this up", and everything sped up dramatically! It felt very rushed in the later half of the book.

I was sadly disappointed with this novel. I usually adore Emily Giffins work, but not so much with this one. It WAS a good storyline that had me finishing in about 3 days. But there was just so much political vomit! I felt as though Giffin was attempting to sway the reader into viewing most, if not all, wealthy, conservative/republican white people (which I am far from) as low-key racists, sexists philanderers who only look out for number 1 at ANY cost. I understand the want/need to be able to relate to readers & to stay relevant, but it just felt to me that Giffin overly interjected her own political bias. And as other reviewers have mentioned, the ending seem rushed & there was no REAL closer given everything that happened as the plot unfolded, just a few references in the epilogue. Many questions are left unanswered.

I honestly felt my IQ lowering as I read this book. I enjoyed her first few books but they have progressively gotten worse. The narrative of the mother is laughable and totally unrealistic, and the ending felt rushed. I am baffled that there are so many good reviews of this book

She is part of the Nashville elite with a charismatic husband and a son that was just accepted into Princeton. It all seems wrong, though. The preoccupation with material wealth, the inability to really connect with her husband or son… this just isn’t who she is. Any of it.Tom is desperately trying to be a good father to Lyla, his beautiful and intelligent daughter. When she got a scholarship to Windsor Academy he is a bit worried, but very proud. Lyla is trying to keep up with her classmates both academically and socially. It’s a different world and sometimes the differences are glaring.A picture snapped in a moment of drunkenness spins out of control. Windsor Academy is going insane with rumors and casting blame. In the eye of the scandal are Tom, Lyla and Nina. Each one is forced to question the relationships of those closest to them, and who they really are.My thoughts:I could not put this book down. It was gorgeously written, and moving. The trio of narratives was an interesting touch. I really enjoyed being able to see more of these characters, their thoughts and motives. These were really interesting, well developed characters. I loved Lyla especially. Tom with the chip on his shoulder and Nina who desperately wants to be seen as a good woman.As far as the plot goes, I found it really intriguing and I loved the different twists and turns that kept me guessing. Through out the book I both loathed and loved certain characters, wanting to believe in them, but not knowing if I can. It’s definitely a different world. I also like how they portrayed the young victim- it was very believable. The horror, shame, inability to believe, and the desire to let it all just fade away. Her strength was also something I really loved. I feel like this book has a lot of adult moments, but also a lot that older teens would like as well. For me, this is a five star book.On the adult content scale, this is pretty high. There’s a lot of language and sexual content as well as drinking. While I would, as I said, see no issue with an older and more mature teen reading it, I have to say it’s meant for adults. I give it an eight.I was lucky enough to receive an eARC of this book from Netgalley and Random House Publishing in exchange for an honest review. My thanks!

I've read a good many of Emily Giffin's books and she's definitely a talented author, but don't go into this one expecting a lighthearted rom-com. The story here, despite its fairly festive, and slightly deceptive cover and title, is no romantic romp. In her more recent novels, Giffin has trended towards more serious family drama, and with this one she jumps into that deep end for sure.This is the story of the Brownings, one of Nashville's golden couples whose son, Finch, attends a prestigious private school and whose parents, old money Kirk, and the less entrenched Nina, rule the social scene. Tom, on the other hand, is a (mostly) single father, whose daughter, Lyla, attends Windsor Academy on scholarship.The book and marketing are extremely coy about how the two families become inextricably intertwined, though it's revealed very early on and is the entire crux of the book, but if you don't want to know, skip to after the next ellipses ...[slight spoiler warning]While his parents attend yet another benefit, Princeton-bound Finch Snapchats a picture of a passed out, partially disrobed Lyla captioned with a racist joke, which soon the whole school has seen and changes both their lives.[/end small spoiler]... How both sets of parents, and children, handle the fallout, is the entire story. The focus is very much on the parents here, namely Tom and Nina, both of whom come at the issue with their kids in different ways due to their own, troubled pasts, which are fairly quickly revealed. Lyla gets a bit more attention in the story, but Finch and Kirk have a fairly skimpy place in this tale.This is fast-paced and, while not always 100% credible—I think the author likes Nina way more than I, the reader, did—it does set up some semi-interesting moral dilemmas, though none are handled especially subtly.It's also a terrifying read as a parent, as you see the many, many ways kids can make incredibly bad, life-changing decisions in mere seconds, which we are completely unable to protect them from. Not that Giffin leans in too much to that aspect, making pretty clear moral judgements that will allow most readers to fall comfortably into the, "this could never happen to me," camp. But, I could see a similar, more nuanced scenario that would ultimately make for a more interesting story, where the moral black and white is much more shades of gray and yeah-it-COULD-happen-to-you.I wavered between three and four stars here, and settled on the latter most because this one was fast-paced and Giffin is an adapt author who knows how to tease out a page turner. ALL WE EVER WANTED kept me engaged until the end, even through its more predictable plot points and ultimately unsatisfying ending, and I finished it in just two settings. Not terribly deep, it's still a decent read.

I gave this book 1 star because zero was not an option. This book is a string of cliches made worse by weak characters, weak plot and a totally predictable ending. A really disappointing book - my first and last book by this author. If you are like the characters in this book who are so rich they never qudestion wasting their money buy this book but don't waste your time reading it.

I especially appreciated notes like "Google maps has the location wrong; here's the right one."I bought this in preparation for my first trip to Taiwan, so I can't testify to the accuracy, but feel like I got a lot more practical information out of this book than from the Lonely Planet and Rough Guide ones. For instance, knowing to avoid Shilin night market ("There are no longer any vegetarian food stalls") in favor of the Raohe Street one probably saved me an evening of my vacation, and that alone is worth more than the price of the book. I'm certainly a lot less stressed out over being able to go around and find agreeable meals with a very limited command of conversational Mandarin.There's also a fairly thorough but not overly long history of the politics of Taiwan that will help to keep me from saying the wrong thing to people I meet and am hoping to impress. If you like to hike or bike-ride, there's a lot of stuff in here related to that too. I read it all even though that's not really my thing, so at least I know what I'm skipping out on.A few side notes: Being a egg-and-milk vegetarian, not a vegan, this book is helpful in the sense that if a meal is "safe" for a vegan diner, then it's safe for me. On the other hand, when the author says of a given location, "there are no restaurants here," there might still be a place where I could get meatless food that might contain egg or some dairy. It would be helpful to people like me if those were indicated alongside, but I get the vegan ethos enough to understand how that might feel to some readers -- and probably to the author as well -- like a compromise of ethical principles, and that this book isn't the place for that. I'm happy to go hunting elsewhere for that information, e.g. Happy Cow. (Oh that someone would write a travel guide inclusive of both vegan and lacto-ovo-vegetarian practices with the same rigor and clarity that this author has!)And couple minor quibbles with the way the pages layout on the Windows 8 (Metro) version of the Kindle App. Tables in grids seem to be a particular problem, and I wish the photos could be zoomed into, but these things might be unavoidable on the platform. I read somewhere that the author is intending to reformat this book to match his newer offering, Taipei in Four Days: A Travel Guide for Vegans, and look forward to a forthcoming edition perhaps addressing some of these issues, which didn't impede at all my ability to read the book. (Also, as I've not bought "Four Days," I can't speak to how much the two overlap, or whether you'd still need to buy that after reading this.)The language is quite clear, and it seems to have been carefully proofread, as I spotted only a couple minor typos. This was also my first Kindle purchase. The experience of reading it more than once reminded me of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, and in my head I heard that deep voice from the radio version intoning lines like "The path is famous for its monkeys."

I’m a big proponent of getting a good travel guide to make the most of overseas travel. Naturally when I decided to travel to Taiwan with my wife I went shopping for the latest guide from the usual mass-market travel guide publishers. Being vegan, seeing a travel guide specifically tailored for vegans was intriguing so I took a chance and went with this one as my sole guide to a five-night stay in Taiwan.On the format, I may not be the most reliable reviewer. I have an older grey Kindles and I never connect it to WiFi, so I can’t vouch for any of the maps or linked content. Not all the tables could be displayed on my device, but otherwise the text and pictures displayed fine. I had 2G data on my phone in Taiwan and was able to figure out most of what I was missing online.Despite the downsides due to my device, the guide met my needs with its written content. It briefly discusses Taiwanese history, discusses useful transport options, recommends and describes various tourist destinations, and contains very useful information on vegetarian and vegan restaurants in Taiwan, including what to look out for with restaurants claiming to be vegan but likely are not.Some of the content and prices were dated, but that happens with the mass-market travel books too. Most of the advice that was off also seemed to have conflicting information online, but we generally take advice with a grain of salt anyway. I will say the book could use a decent editor, as the grammar and spelling mistakes are frequent and distracting.On the flip side, there were many recent updates to this book, including information about restaurants scheduled to close immediately following our trip and even discussed the earthquake in early 2018. Overall, it helped us make the most of our trip with restaurant and hiking recommendations alone. Definitely worth the price and I have no regrets.

An extremely helpful guide for touring the northern half of Taiwan.I can't stress enough how helpful this book was for my trip. With very little english spoken in Taiwan, I basically always had this book open on my phone for directions as well as recommendations of what to try.The routes set in the guide are very flexible and always include comprehensive recommendations for vegan meals along the way. Also helpful is the breakdown of smaller practical things like the transit system and etiquette. The heart of the book is Taipei where there is plenty to eat and see.The excursions to the Taroko Gorge and the north east coast were personal favorites of mine. As this seems to be an ongoing project I hope to see Alishan and Sun Moon Lake as well as southern Taiwan added in the future. But if your trip is less than 10 days there's more than enough things in here to fill your time. Special shout out to how helpful the author was through email.

My wife and I ordered four copies of this fantastic book and we are ordering more for our friends who can benefit from improved health and more energy. The amazing thing about this book is Breeana Pooler found her passion along with saving her husband's life through her food plans. Her husband,Jason, improved his heart performance from 9% to 35% (a relative 388% improvement) in three short months, and avoided a heart transplant. The cardiologists were amazed at Jason's unbelievable recovery using food as a medicine..My wife suffers from MS and hopes to also improve her condition by following the plan because she sees a correlation between Breeana's recipes and the ability to repair her body just as Jason did..Further, the book is filled with vivid pictures of Breeana's prepared dishes along with "crisp" and thorough descriptions of easy-to-follow instructions.If there were a grade higher than an "A", I would give it to Breeana - Awesome Job!

Breeana and her husband are so inspiring! To think he was on a heart transplant list and is now healthy is an incredible story. I have made several of the recipes in the book and some have become staples. The Chia Seed Pudding with Raspberry is such a healthy, yummy treat. When I feel like eating out or feel like cooking is too much work, I read the introduction to the book and get back on the right path. Thanks, Breeana!
