I love this new journal from The Thinking Tree! It will guide our family in a fun and informative world geography study. This books really draws kids in with its beautiful illustrations and prompts to discover new things about our world.
This, like most of The Thinking Tree books is a researched based book which requires you provide internet or other books to be able to fill out the worksheets in this book. I bought this book for our homeschool history/geography studies for the next school year. What I like about this book is that not only are you doing book research you are coloring, challenging the student to answer questions about the continents, and finding the beauty of the world. This book can be shared with our 4 homeschoolers which means we save money (read more about it at the end of the review).Research pages for each continent include:1. What do you know about it?2. A World Wonder Searches - You research the accompanying picture's photo and try to find it online to write about the "wonder" or your student finds another beautiful place in that continent - Name it, the country it is in, 5 facts, and illustrating it themselves. There are a different number of illustrations to find in the continent.3. Animal Pages - List 10 Animals and Draw Them4. Countries Pages - Write the names of the countries of Africa and write the corresponding number on the accompanying map on the subsequent page.5. Travel Dreams Pages - Where would you like to go? Why do you want to go there? What is the climate like? A unique fact. Illustrate the place you want to go.6. Movie Time - Watch a movie documentary about the country. Rate it and draw your favorite scene.7. Drawing Time - Copy an illustration from one of your books.8. Reading Time - Write about the books you are reading about this continent.9. Story Writing Time - Write a creative story that occurs in your continent.10. Music of the World - Listen to traditional music and describe the instruments used and songs you listened to.11. Favorites Page - Write in your favorite things about the continent.It is very thorough and can be used with one student over an extended amount of time. Or it can be used in a group of students, especially with teaching multi-level homeschooling by dividing the pages between your various children and watching the movies, sharing books, etc. This book was created so that you can make multiple copies for only the children in your household which is a win-win if you're wanting to save money and do this all together.
I thought this book was a great idea for fostering our geography studies and bought a copy for each of my kids to work on. However, in paging through just now was surprised to see the page with pictures of Antarctic wildlife include many (most) that are ARCTIC not Antarctic. Penguins and terns, yes; certain marine mammals, yes. But in Antarctica there are no land mammals (polar bear, caribou, lemming, fox) and no owls or puffins. Did the book's creators not research this at all? Also, how are kids supposed to figure out which World Wonder is depicted in each sketch? And why are there no World Wonders listed in the back for Antarctica? Just curious.
We are using this book plus the travel dreams book to help guide us in our world geography studies this year. There is a section for each continent, and wonderful prompts for you to use in your research. Beautiful drawings throughout the book. It prompts you to find the continent on the map, study the natural wonders on that continent, the animals, listing the countries and then labeling them on the map, creating your own drawings and watching a movie about that continent. And so much more!
This research based journal is exactly what we needed to bring some fun into our homeschool! There are so many fun and interesting activities in it that keep us engaged and wanting to learn more. We can go as fast or slow as we want and dig deeper into subjects that interest us the most! We own several other of these journals and look forward to using these for many years! Sarah has a true gift for delight directed learning materials!
Beautiful book and great ideas on what to learn by the questions. I wil definitely be buying the CD when we get to this book. I like this approach a lot better than the other workbooks I have seen about continents.

This journals is full of fun pages to learn about each continent. It can be used individually or in a group setting. Sarah has done a wonderful job wit this one.
