The book was intriguing and I read on hoping to find clear answers to my questions. There are so many characters and illegitimate births that I somehow missed the line of connections to just why did Lucy inherit the mansion and how were Clare and lucy connected. Sometimes facts contradicted each other leading me astray. It ended nicely but I kept pondering the answers to my questions above. A mystery is great but not if the book ends and you didn’t get it. Reviews are great on Amazon but the reviews in the app point out these flaws. Also the narration was awful. The way overdone drawl made my skin crawl.
This is the telling of three women's lives. Three generations, all intertwined. At her mother's death bed, Lucy learns that everything she thought she knew about her mother and self is a lie. She goes to Virginia to claim the home, Winter Cottage, a stranger has left to her. Told in three voices, you find out who Clare, Beth and Lucy are; as necessary secrets become exposed. At first the switching of voices and time periods is a little confusing. Hang in there. It is worth the wait. Beautifully told, Winter Cottage is a tale of secrets, passions, abuse, sacrifices and unconditional love.
This is the first book I have read by Mary Ellen Taylor. I like her writing style and enjoyed the book greatly. There are a lot of characters and a lot of history but she brings it all together nicely. The ending is predictable but the plot has some unexpected twists. I look forward to reading more of this author's work.
The past and present were well combined as Lucy, mourning her mother, learns about the past she never knew she had.The characters are well developed through their actions and are mostly likable (naming the biggest exception would be a spoiler). The story is basic - young woman finds a home and family in a seaside setting. The setting, characters and back story of Winter Garden build a mystery that comes to a satisfying conclusion that is not expected.
This is a story of survival in difficult and trying times, told in alternating chapters by three women – Claire, Beth and Lucy – in three different time periods. I loved the book although it was difficult, for me, to keep the characters and relationships straight. I finally resorted to making a pedigree chart. There is so much to love about this story that the small amount of time making the chart made it worth it. The ending is predictable but getting there is worth the ride. The story is well written, well edited and descriptions of the time periods very realistic. There is so much sadness but so much hope. I wanted so much more for Claire. And, yes, I can see this made into a movie. (If a movie is made I hope the screenwriter reads my #3 below.)But there are things I didn’t like, too, hence the 4 stars instead of 5. 1. I prefer a story told in forward progression. Flashbacks are one thing, but going back and forth is draining. 2. Beth, the middle and more of a bridge between Claire and Lucy, is told in present tense and I kept wanting to read it like the other parts. 3. I think Hank should have descended from Claire and Robert not Victoria but still next in line. After Victoria leaves Winter Cottage and marries Edward Garrison that should have been the end of her which basically it was except for one tiny mention that she (Victoria) lived a long life. 4. I really wish Claire and Jimmy would have had more time together after – well you’ll have to read the story to find out ‘after’ what.
My new favorite author who has a great talent with the written word. Great story line. Great characters. Hard to put down as there is something pulling you back throughout the book. Looking forward to reading the next book by this author.
A book about generations of mis deeds of a prominant family and all the lies and subterfuge to bury the truth . It's an interesting plot as it shows how many lives were altered by one decision.
What a wonderful, riveting book! That old cliche "I couldn't put it down" certainly applied here!
