I’ve been reading historical fiction for some 60 years now, much of it of the Roman kind. Top of the list remains for me Howard Fast’s masterful Spartacus, read seven or eight times over the past half century, followed closely by Robert Graves’ Claudius novels and more recently by Robert Harris’ absorbing Cicero trilogy. The Vindolanda novels are not of course in this league, nor did I expect them to be. But having enjoyed popular historian Adrian Goldsworthy’s gripping biography of Julius Casar, I knew that any novel written by him was going to be, at the very least, authentic, and quite likely exciting in its action episodes. And so it proved to be. Certainly the most convincing and immersive Roman adventure I’ve read in a while.But Mr Goldsworthy is not a natural novelist. His descriptive powers are pretty good since he knows what he’s writing about. But his narrative tends to be pedestrian, lacking a good storyteller’s instinctive flights of memorable lyricism and concise yet telling prose. I don’t find his characters very interesting. None of them is sufficiently engaging, not even his main protagonist Flavius Ferox who, as in ‘Vindolanda’, remains a stock hard-arsed yet dutiful bad boy grieving for his lost love, while his sidekick Vindex is little more than a conduit for wise-cracking comic relief. They don’t come across as real people to me.And while I quite enjoyed reading the first Vindolanda novel, mainly because of the authentic detail, I have to confess that I didn’t finish ‘The Encircling Sea’. About half way through I decided that I really wasn’t interested enough to continue while I had potentially better reads waiting for me.
This second book in a series is as well-crafted and enjoyable as the first, with a trip to Ireland and the west islands thrown in. The battles are detailed and lively, and the author makes good use of his knowledge of the Roman civilization as he tells his story.
This continuation of Vindolanda is as appealing as the first novel. The characters are well defined and interesting and the historical settings are fascinating. Can’t wait for the next book. I hope it also has Whispersync attached (Audible narration). The reader for the first two novels is superb.
If you want to know how the Romans really lived while manning Hadrian's Wall this novel brings it to life. Not surprisingly since the author is England's leading Roman historian.
This author has amazed me with his writing. I have already pre-ordered the third book in the series. The wait of a year gnaws at me, but time passes and I will not wish my life away.
I read this and Vindolanda as if one book and it worked well that way. I'm looking forward to reading more books in the series.
The character development and pace were great. I got into the book and hated to put it down. Look forward to the next installment!
Author does a great job of writing prose using historical knowledge.
