This is the first Captivating History book I've read and found it to be well-researched and thorough. It's satisfying to gather this much information in such a compact form. The only improvement I would recommend is more diligent editing to remove/clarify the couple of contradictions I found and to eliminate the jarring experience of reading words & phrases (such as: wowed, pushover, cold feet, powerhouse, duking it out, zero hour, etc.) that do not fit with the vast majority of the writing. All in all, a very good read.
This is one of three books (ordered separately) that tell the ancient story of Gilgamesh, the King, in a way children can understand it and is appropriate for children. We use it to accompany our Classical education homeschooling.
I’ve always wondered what the content of Gilgamesh was. I’m happy to have found this book and finally know. Well written, easy to read, short and well researched, captivating.
Not an in-depth study, but a fine account of the story. Additional references are provided for additional study for those wanting more. Really enjoying these books in the series.
I had never found before such a complete narration of the legend of Gilgamesh. It is truly captivating, quite difficult to stop its reading.
What we see here is fact vs. fiction. Did Gilgamesh actually exist. In doing research on this person there was information that would you both ways.Hi is listed on the Sumerian list of kings so it seems he was a real historical person. In reading the book there seems to be a lot of myth & legends that can be associated with an actual person or simply a legend.One of the most interesting reads in the Captivating History Series!Read the book and come to your own conclusions about Gilgamesh.
I have found the entire "Captivating History" series to be valuable as a nice overview to a subject prior to diving in to more comprehensive study. "Gilgamesh" exceeded my expectations in this regard. It provides a clear and concise summary of the story, yes; but one that reads as prose in its own right. Readers who would be overwhelmed by the prospect of puzzling through broken and incomplete lines of the original will find here a cogent and entertaining narrative where the missing pieces are acknowledged in a way that is satisfying and not at all jarring. For most casual readers, this is as complete a presentation of the Epic of Gilgamesh as they will ever need. Exceptionally well done!
