He is a leader in the study of the molecular and cellular mechanisms of human primary immune deficiencies and in the treatment of these disorders. This is an excellent adjunct to a study of immunology. It presents some 55 immunological disorders and in so doing goes through the presentation, the underlying immunological defect, and the potential treatment. It covers a wide range of the more common to the less well seen ones. The presentation of each disease is exceptionally well done and is adequate for a first or second year Med student. It is an introductory approach and in the 55 cases gives a broad coverage of immunological defects.The Immune System is just that, a system. The input is the stem cells in the bone and the output is what these cells do to either invaders from without or to the cells of the person in which they function. One could look at the diseases presented herein as defects along the chain of this system. A missing gene, a defect in the immune cells recognition or response. It would be interesting to approach immune disorders in the context of this systems manner, as say is done with Fault Tree analysis in complex dynamic systems. For example, seeing some defect, one should be able to work backwards and determine what elements in the system chain are defective. The approach in this book is classic Medicine of what the disease is, how to treat it, and a smattering of why it occurred. An overall system approach would be of significant interest as well.
This is a great book for immunology, especially if you are an ID or Rheum fellow
