This is not a “nice†book to read. This is a MUST book to read. Not only does this book cover the topic of money and kids, but it covers every single topic of money you can think of (getting out of debt, how to save for college, how to get your credit score right and tight, how to tackle money and marriage/relationships, how to say no to family members/friends who keep asking you for money, etc). Seriously, you can’t get any more real about the money answers Patrice shares in this book than this.Patrice gives, real, honest and practical tips to winning at the money game. I’m determined to end the generational negligence on money in our family and it’s starting with how we raise our kids to understand how it works.
For this to be a book about winning the money game with or without a man, the Author only had a small section dedicated to women without men trying to get their finances in order. The rest of the book to me was geared towards couples and families. I think the Author provided a few gems but it was mostly common sense info sprinkled with the Author endorsing herself and the people she knows (she mentioned Steve Harvey more times than I can count).
This book is the most thorough book I have every read on personal finance. I think it should be required reading since financial literacy is an area of lack for many of us. I realized I need to do a better job of staying on top of my bank statements, budgeting and financial planning for the future. The only reason this is four stars and not five is because in one part of the book where she is providing questions you should ask your romantic partner--she gave no context for when these questions should be asked. I don't think bringing up finances is even appropriate until you're an official item not in the early dating stages unless it is just something basic like career and lifestyle preference. Also, in another section of the book she is assuming women who are interested in men with financial stability are automatically gold diggers. I don't think it is fair to paint a brush over all women who prefer men of means. Many women are career women and simply want a guy on their level or higher. Some women want to be taken care of financially. Absolutely NOTHING wrong with that. No one should judge what someone chooses to do or not do. Even for family, she is advising you not help your family even if you have the means to do so...which I don't think was the right advice.
Love Patrice and her podcast. Wanted to get her book. So far, this is more of a therapy/self-help book in the frame of financial outlook. I have cried a couple times in the first few chapters. That being said, it feels like there is a good amount of fluff in this book as well. There are times when I think, “some of this is a waste of time.†This is common in the genre, but there are a select few books where I’ve thought, “jeez I need every word of this.â€@ I look forward to seeing how Patrice grows as an author. I would definitely recommend this to anyone. If someone is open to really changing their mindset about money, I think this is a decent and friendly place to explore or start. Another thing I appreciate about it is that it is not just for people who came from wealth or just for people who came from poverty. It seems pretty useful for anyone.
This was another one that was suggted to me after listening to a radio program for ladies…this information seemed like it would be great for my adult girls….
Patrice Washington does a great job of explaining how to manage money along with providing the reader with practical advice. This book is not just for women, but anyone who needs to take control of their financial existence .
Love this book! I've only had this book less than a week and I am almost finished. I am seeing myself all through this book and I am in need of a drastic change. I am a 32 year old female in need of a revamping in the financial department and with your help I see me getting where I desire and need to be.
I came across this book and author when reading amazon reviews. When it came, I read just a few pages before mailing it to my son who is 24. Actually I mailed it to his Girlfriend who is 27. The Title about ...." With or Without a Man" is fine, but I had to make sure they understood I wasn't being passive aggressive about their relationship! just the opposite!This author took the FEAR out of learning to understand how to handle money and to feel good about making smart decisions and planing one's finances.
