Finding the right book to share the Gospel with children can be a challenge. You want a great message, illustrations kids love, and a story that will keep their attention. Each child is different and God uses a variety of tools to reach each person.In Wow! The Good News in Four Words by Dandi Daley Mackall and illustrated by Annabel Tempest, kids learn about the Gospel in an engaging way. Filled with beautiful illustrations, and rhyming patterns, this story invites children to participate as the book is read to them.At the beginning of the book, there is a note to parents. While I like this as it explains the concept of the four words, WOW, UH-OH, YES, and AHHH, I’m not sure how much kids will remember the meaning of each of these at the beginning of the story. That said, kids are encouraged to say these words as the story is read to them, which is something I loved.The story pretty much follows creation, Jesus coming and dying, believing in Him, and then life after believing in Jesus. I appreciate that the author went farther than accepting Jesus and ending the story. It was nice that they talked about the Fruit of the Spirit and being in heaven one day singing with the angels.This was a nice story to introduce young children to the Gospel. I liked the way the key words were included and kids were encouraged to say them as the story progressed. I think over time, kids will start to associate the words with certain concepts in the story, which is what the book was designed to do.I really enjoyed the illustrations. They were bright and cute. I enjoyed all of the colors on the pages and found the pictures to enhance the story.Overall, this was a nice book for young children. The author took a concept that can be challenging to explain to children and broke it down in a way that should be understandable and give parents talking points and references to use.*I received a free copy of this product to facilitate this post, however you, my readers, come first and all opinions are my own.
I have not read too many of the numerous children's books written by Dandi Daley Mackall. But, the ones I have read, I have enjoyed, and I especially like the way they share Scripture with young children in simple ways. This book of hers "Wow! The Good News in Four Words" is no exception. It is a fun book that helps children (and adults) remember the Gospel message by the use of 4 little words. WOW - presents the account of Creation and shares God's love for us. UH-OH - discusses the fall of mankind and how we all sin. YES - talks about Jesus' birth, death and resurrection, and how we can be forgiven of our sins if we say yes to Jesus. AHHH - is about eternal life and the peace we can have with Jesus as a part of our lives. WOW (again) - encourages us to grow in our faith and share the Good News with others.I really like the note to parents at the beginning of the book that explains these words, and also gives Scripture references to back them up. You can also find more references at the back of the book for those who wish to dig even deeper into the Gospel and God's plan for us.The only thing I don't care for is how busy some of the pages are with illustrations. The illustrations by Annabel Tempest are well-done, however, there is just a bit too much on each page for my liking. For some children, that might be great, but for me and my children, "less is more." We prefer few and simple illustrations that are a little less distracting. But, other than that, the book is good and I would recommend it.Tyndale House Publishers provided me with a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
Wow! The Good News in Four Words by Dandi Daley Mackall is a great hard-cover picture book! It is geared toward boys and girls ages 3-6 years old. It presents in a simplified way on how to come to know Jesus as their own personal Savior and Lord.The main four words used are Wow, Uh-oh, Yes, and Ahh. Each word is broken down through the book. The word "Wow" for example demonstrates and explains the creation of the world, the word Uh-Oh shows how sin entered the world and how we became separated from God, you get the picture. The message is powerful and it's the most simplified version of the gospel I've seen for children in this age range. At the beginning of the book, there's a Note to the Parents. This note explains the words simplified and includes a couple of scripture references that correspond to each word. There is also a For Further Study section in the back of the book. The back section spotlights each of the words again but this time provides more scripture references pertaining. Having this included is wonderful and a great way to grow in more understanding of it.The illustrations are so colorful and fun to look at. I love there are children and adults in the book of all sorts of races. Some may find the imagery busy but my children loved looking at each page for many minutes to see all that there was to look at. There are no scary images in this book. The cross scene was drawn in a way that wouldn't be offending.The book is easy to understand and writing is written in rhyme. Children are likely to remember the "Good News" using this book as a resource. This book most definitely could be used in a church classroom setting and especially at home.*Tyndale House Publishers has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book for my personal review of this book. *
