This is a story about race relations and lynching and the public rush to judgment about a perceived racist. It explores some very difficult areas in an entertaining manner. I enjoyed this book very much, but thought it was way too short! Can’t wait for the next one
Having grown up in Live Oak, I wasn’t expecting to like this book, as those who aren’t from here seem to always want to paint the area as filled with uneducated, unwashed “rednecksâ€, which is untrue.Grippando does a good job of avoiding that kind of thing, and is obviously a thorough researcher.I hate a boring book. This isn’t one of them, and it is based on actual events. The very thought of a lynching in today’s society is abhorrent, as it should be. The subject matter made me hesitant to buy the book but I wanted to see how the place where my family has lived since the early 1800’s was portrayed.I found it to be pretty spot on. Every town has its heroes and its zeroes, honesty and lies, the righteous and the corrupt.I also found myself reading very late at night because I didn’t want to put it down.
I have read almost all of Grippando's books now. I was not as enthralled with this one as much as the others. For one thing, I felt it was on the slow side for almost half the book until it became more suspenseful. There were so many characters mentioned in the beginning that I lost track of who was who. I thought that Mark should have been a more likeable, sympathetic character and developed more. I couldn't find much compassion for him. It was sad to me not to have more storyline for Jack and Angie. Also, Theo was pretty much relegated to a few mentions. The book ended quickly too. So, the second half was really good and that's why I rated it a 4, not a 3. But I love all the other Grippando books!!
I like the Jack Swyteck series a lot, but I loved this one. The story was very interesting and provocative. The parallels between Jack and Andi’s cases added a dimension to the plot although Andi’s story was disturbing. I won’t say why because that would be a plot spoiler. I think this is my favorite of the series. Great read.
Grippando knows how to keep the suspense and the twists going.... A page turner for sure... This was a bold and risky move for him to write this, and I didn’t expect the culprit(s) to be who they end up being! While it’s very solid fiction, it also left me with a sad feeling at the end... No one wins really in this one, not even his wife. Makes one think!
A great author so this is not a negative for him...but the book involved too much racism & hate. And with today's racial divisions we need to find something more positive & uplifting to read.
Intriguing and timely story. Jack Swyteck is a favorite character of mine, and this book did NOT disappoint. Well-drawn characters with a story that was hard to read at times because racism still exists and white supremacists have become emboldened in the past two years. Thought-provoking and affecting. Excellent novel.
Very boring. It appears all the writer did was take the Duke U.foul up and change it to Florida,At least it points out that the constitutional right of “Innocent till proven guilty†does not apply to white guys as a “Person of Interestâ€
