The idea of this book is good but the execution is highly questionable. According to the book:- All images or drawings of nude bodies are pornography that are "poison for your brain" - this explanation is incorrect & psychologically extremely unhealthy representation of nudity & human body. This has been proven to result in children developing shame around their bodies & about being naturally curious about human body (which is absolutely normal for young children). What about art? What about anatomical representations of human body they will encounter in a biology class? What about the fact that each kid at some point in their life saw at least one parent as least partially naked & that their parents saw them naked many times? Well, according to the book in all these situations, children need to immediately cover their eyes & run away, to prevent poisoning their bran?! This is also a very problematic way of teaching kids how to cope with unpleasant or bad situations in life in general.- Term pornography is discussed in book written for 3-6 year olds. Introducing this word & concept & with it, all follow up questions a child will have, is not appropriate for this age group. Children 3-6 years old are not developmentally ready to receive & comprehend explanation on what pornography really is (and no, it's not just any nude image of human body).- Book also teaches children to whisper to their trusted adult about bad images they saw. Whisper? Why? Why not just have a normal, healthy, open conversation with your parent, out loud? Again, the book suggests that children should be ashamed of their "secret" of seeing a bad picture & should be secretive about it. Just plain wrong & damaging for child's development.Such a missed opportunity with this book to help parents properly tackle such an important topic.
This was wonderfully & tastefully written! My 6yr old son loved reading it with me! He had fun finding the cameras (but on one page identified the phone as the camera instead of the old-school camera! Ha!). He had unfortunately already seen a "bad picture" at a friends house, & the advice given at the end of the book on how to not picture that when he closes his eyes at night helped him immensely. After we went through all of it, before he walked away from me, he hugged me tight & thanked me sincerely for reading it to him & helping him. It sure made me tear up. Since then he has pointed out bad pics in stores (magazine displays, etc.), & good pics that we take of him! And he hasn't complained anymore of seeing the bad pics in his head. Thank you so much for creating this book, & all the emails that I was able to sign up for the your website!
Great way to teach your children. Pornography is a topic that can be hard for parents to talk about without embarrassment but this book takes all that away. Simply read it to your child! The author has already figured out the words to say...nothing more, nothing less. It is short and to the point so it can hold the attention of young children and it is presented in a way they can understand. The book also gives children a plan for what to do when they see it. They can learn the actions to take. I also love that it includes what kinds of pictures NOT to take of yourself or to let others take of you. In a world where pornography is rampant parents need to be fully informed on this issue and take steps to teach and protect their children . With today's computers and devices...exposure at some point is a certainly. So when that day comes, if I child has been taught about Bad pictures they will recognize it and be prepared to protect themselves. Safe and happy children is what we all want!
Good book. General and secular. We are a Christian home and his was a great starting book to talk about this topic. My kids like this book and they make it easy to understand and remember. I highly recommend. We have ages 9,5,3,1 who have read this book and they all enjoy it.
I am SO excited about this book! I was once talking to another mom about how to approach this subject with our kids, and she said, "I wish we had cue cards!" That's exactly what this is! Only better, because it is an easy-to-ready picture book that is fun and interesting for my kids. Double score!Plus, it doesn't just teach my kids how to identify pornography; it gives them a practical, usable action plan ("turn, run, and tell") that's as easy to remember--and as easy to use--as "stop, drop, and roll." And let's face it: our kids are more likely to see porn than they are to catch on fire, so giving them the tools to deal with this as early as possible makes so much sense!The pictures are beautiful! And I love the added hidden-camera feature. (There are little drawings of cameras hidden in the pictures throughout the book.) This is a great way to keep my kiddo's attention and make it fun while I'm reading. It's also helpful that the text uses the term "bad pictures" and makes the word "pornography" optional. I know some parents have a hard time with that, and it's not even an issue with the way this book is written. Such an EASY approach tackling such a tough topic! Love it.
As a parent of five grown children and thirteen grandchildren I can highly recommend this book. Our world is much different than when I was raising my children. My grandchildren deal with more unintended exposure to pornography at a much younger age then my children. This book is age appropriate for very young children which can open discussion with their parents. I also appreciate the advice to adults on how to deal with different situations. I will buy additional copies for all my children who have the most important job of raising my grandchidren.
