He is co-author and/or co-editor of Taking Things Seriously, The Idler's Glossary, and Significant Objects, among other titles. Josh was a columnist and blogger for the Boston Globe's IDEAS section; he published the zine/journal HERMENAUT. He lives in Boston.Elizabeth Foy Larsen was a member of the team that launched Sassy, a magazine for teen girls. I bought this book as a gift for a 13 year old boy. I glanced through it when it arrived and the first page I looked at was in the "society" section. An example of one of the questions it covers is "What can feminist kids do to change American society?" ... Not the fun book I was looking for. If you are looking for this type of book, it is definitely for older kids.
I bought this, along with several other books, as a gift for my 12 year old grandson this Christmas. He's an avid reader so I always try to find unusual books that I think will spark his interest. I hit the jackpot with this book. He happened to open this gift first.....and had to be reminded twice that he had other gifts to open! He opened the book and barely looked up! His mother told me that he stayed up all night, reading this book. I would recommend it for any 12-16 year old with an active mind.
Anything interesting in this book we had already discovered and the vast majority of the contents wouldn't have been of interest to any child of the recommended age that I know. Writing exercises? Reading food labels? Save the planet? Much of it was not even things to do other than read the book.Also wondered at the kitchen safety basics: "If you accidentally turn on the gas and the burner doesn't light, open the window and leave the room for a few minutes." Remember this is written for kids - maybe tell them to turn the gas off too! What other safety gems might I have missed in here?My son and I went through the book together and the only project he wanted to do was the remote control water blaster (which did work nicely). Overall, I felt it was a bit too preachy about how the authors think you should lead your life and an awful lot like school at times. My son pronounced the book "boring." Possibly better for girls? Headed to the donation bin.
Wonderful book. Bought it for my 9 year old who can't get enough of the fun projects and chapters in it. Have since bought it for several of her friends as an old-school kids gift that has nothing to do with electronics.
Not what I expected but that's my fault. Great book for a younger audience. Don't think older kids would get much out of it.
This is definitely the perfect field guide for making your own fun, but it's so much more than that. It includes parenting tips, home remedies, and other contemporary child-rearing advice. It contains amazing reviews of books and movies from a variety of genres. These authors have a scope of knowledge so beyond my own, that I might not otherwise have introduced these books and movies to my children. AND it's for older kids, because in my house we have definitely outgrown sock puppets and paper plate masks (although both might work for our first stop-action film - see p. 232).
Variety of different games to play with the family. Some require set-up. Others are some I've never heard of before, but don't require a lot of work. Setting up a treasure hunt looks fun. Gets the little grey cells working, as Poirot would say!
There are a lot of good stuff in this book from DIYs to other kinds of facts and tutorials. My 10-year old niece and 8-year old nephew likes it and they are able to easily follow the instructions. I have schemed through some of the pages as well and have learned some good stuff. Guaranteed to be useful for kids, adults, and the whole family to get you do something and make you unbored.
