I made the mistake of not inspecting the publish date of this book before purchase. That date is 2004, and since then a large number of discoveries have been made that make this book mildly "outdated" in some chapters.Nonetheless, I enjoyed what I read. Neil DeGrasse Tyson has a great way of speaking of cosmology and astronomy in a way that is easily digestible. Topics that traditionally would overwhelm the average reader are made clear and understandable throughout the book, making this a great beginner to intermediate read for anyone interested in the discussed topics.I did find a few grammatical errors, and the book does jump around a lot in a way that sometimes feels abrasive. But overall, it's a solid book.
They met while Neil was still a school boy and he came to meet with Carl in New York one Sunday many years ago. Carl was impressed with Neil and we know the feeling is returned. Both of them share the same genius for explaining complicated abstract concepts in a simple and clear way. Many scientific writers think they have this talent and many of them are wrong. I love the work of these two men for their remarkable talent for simple explanation. Their work may be equalled but only rarely so. Thank you Mr Tyson for being such a wonderful ambassador for such difficult concepts. And thank you Carl for inspiring him. This book is my new favourite for explaining the unexplainable: Our origins and place in the Cosmos.
Neil deGrasse Tyson, heir apparent to Carl Sagan's Cosmos, is a gifted storyteller. His account of the origins of the Universe & everything in it makes for enjoyable reading. He has a knack for making an easy explanation of the Universe's myriad of mysteries, including the Big Bang, how stars, galaxies, & planets form, & also how the search for exoplanets is conducted. Tyson reminds me so much of Sagan, whose work I've also enjoyed - his friendly manner, ability to captivate his audience, a distinct speaking style, & a clever wit. Oh, & handsome too!
Another great book from America's most intelligent man alive. Neil is hands down the guy America needs today. I wished Neil would get into politics and run for President. We need to have intellectuals and scientists as our role models and heroes. Neil is number one on my list. Read his books, listen to his radio show, watch his TV series and enjoy the depth of his genius mind.
One of the best science books I've ever read. Full of mind bending information and written in a very understandable and digestible style. I have read a couple of books by Hawking and enjoyed them, but this book was my favorite. I highly recommend Origins to anybody with an interest in the history of the universe. I will never think about the universe the same old way.
This is my first book by Neil Tyson and I was elated to find his writing style similar to Carl Sagan's. Of course it's a little different than Carl's because they are different people - but the main point is that Neil does the same fantastic job that Carl Sagan did in making complex subjects refreshingly simple but fascinating....A big part of this is providing (often ingenious) examples for every point that the 'average layman' might need in order to make the text crystal clear and interesting to read.Neil Tyson's "Origins" - just like most of Carl Sagan's books - I devoured as fast as I could. It gave me but another viewpoint of an obviously gifted astrophysicist and writer's view of the evolution of the cosmos.
Anything Tyson is involved with is likely to be written in a clear and entertaining manner and this is no exception. The treatment of its topics is very thorough for a book directed at a non-specialist audience, so it's not an easy read, but well worth the effort.
This is a great book for the layman who is interested in astronomy and astrophysics. It helps if the reader is somewhat knowledgeable in the subject. The book is well organized, and follows logically from one subject to the other.
