Terrific book. I am experienced with oil pastel and this had a good deal of technical information that I was unfamiliar with. Unlike oil paints and chalk pastels, this is a medium many instructors in art schools just do not have a handle on technically, so this book fills a real gap. The writer's voice is very pleasing and sounds like someone who loves to teach and encourage. In addition to showing his own work, as many artists do in their "how to" books, he had the generosity and insight to show the work of many other oil pastelists also, showing a very wide range of work. If you are a highly detailed naturalist or a very physical abstract artist you will see how this material can serve your work. Great pictures and detailed demonstrations.
I teach oil pastels. This is the only book on the subject that I found to be worthwhile. I especially enjoyed the writer’s conversational style and inclusion on other oil pastel artists and their stories. I was able to do further research on those artist which I could share with my students. Loved it.

I thought this was going to have more information pertinent to using oil pastels for current landscape artwork. I was disappointed. It is more mixed media, and less technique for accomplishing traditional artwork.
After reading the reviews, I really was in doubt. "Purposedly childish paintings" was not what I wanted. On the other hand, a lot of great oil pastelists praised the book and said it was super useful. Now, after reading the book, I can agree that it's totally worth the purchase. There are lots of paintings of all kinds. Yes, many of them are not my style, but the author gives interesting descriptions of all of them making you pay attention to some nuances. Some of the paintings are fantastic. The book is delight to eyes, big format and many paintings have details closeups.And the book itself is in-depth, the author gives plenty of useful details and experienced advice on oil pastels usage. The book is packed with them actually.Some chapters like subject of the painting or color wheel might contains lots of info you already know, but personally I found it a pleasure to read about it because all the examples were in oil pastels. Marvellous book, highly recommended!
Terrific book! Super basic instruction, but not so simple that a more experienced pastelist would be bored. It's a thorough commentary on the various types of pastels, papers and accessories.
Excellent book for techniques and ideas for working with oil pastels. I purchased the spiral edition, which lies flat on my table.
I read things in here that have changed my way of painting, both in watercolor and in oil paint! Even if I didn't continue painting in oil pastels, which I will, I shall forever be grateful to Mr. Leslie for making so many insightful statements regarding the process of creating. Thank goodness for people like Kenneth Leslie who are willing to spend the time to write such a book and share their valuable experience.
